LAPIS 3

mars yard tests

Mars Yard is a 500 square foot plot that has been rendered to simulate the surface of Mars in color and texture. The Mars Yard, at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), outside of Pasadena, California, is where FIDO field tests take place before actual desert field tests occur in May. The tests that occur at Mars Yard are called Operational Readiness Tests (ORT).

The Los Angeles LAPIS team will do field work at the Mars Yard in April 2001. Their field tests, which include examination and physical testing of FIDO mechanics and tools, are small scale versions of the tests that all LAPIS 3 students will participate in on May 10-11 from Pasadena, California. The Los Angeles team is also responsible for generating reports on what activities went on during the day and interviewing scientists at JPL in order to keep all the other LAPIS teams informed on the status of FIDO and its progress.
