about LAPIS |
|
LAPIS is a program designed to allow high school students to become more involved in the NASA program. The program started 3 years ago and included student teams from Los Angeles (LA), Phoenix (P), Ithaca (I), and St Louis (S). This year, the team from Phoenix has been replaced with a team from Haltom, TX.
Team members are paired with local science mentors who are part of the Athena Science Team, whose aim is to send research rovers to Mars in 2003.
Each team has a specific task. The LA team is in charge of mastering WITS (Web Interface for TeleScience), the application used to command the rover. The Texas team will catalog images and minerals of the soils that the rover will excavate. The Ithaca team will be preparing a mission plan. The St Louis team has created this website, and will familiarize themselves with Viz (short for Visualization and Analysis).
In Mid-May, the students will convene in Pasadena, California, to test drive FIDO at JPL (Jet Propulsion Labs). The St Louis team will then create the Analyst's Notebook.
