LAPIS 3

analyst's notebook

The Analyst’s Notebook essentially archives an entire mission into a single log, discussing and presenting data collected throughout trials. The Notebook’s primary purpose is to display every aspect of mission operation and data acquisition so scientists from outside the project may recreate the mission (similar to a procedure in a lab experiment). Data can be organized into several categories: by Sol, by Instrument, or by Target.

Data by Sol (a Martian day is known as a sol) lists the procedural and metric data collected each sol and is accompanied by a brief description of operations.  Data by Instrument organizes the data by the method with which it was collected.  The instruments include the Pancam, the Navcam, the RAT (Rock Abrasion Tool), the Möessbauer Spectrometer, the IPS (Infrared Point Spectrometer), the CMI (Color Microscopic Imager), the Bellycam, and the Hazcam. Lastly, Data by Target displays each sample, rock, or other geological feature and the procedures used to study and examine them.

The analyst's notebook will be posted soon after the field tests in mid-May.
