Sample frame from video
This video was shot during the December 1996 field test of Rocky 7. The rover is positioned along ejecta from Spa Crater. To collect a sample, Rocky 7 first opens the scoop and lowers its arm until it contacts the ground. This gives the rover a more accurate assessment of how deep to dig than from its navigation images. Rocky 7 then proceeds to attempt a dig. This is a difficult process because the rover is so light (approximately 15 kg) that it will actually lift itself up when the ground is too hard.
