WHAT TO BRING

Clothes

• WATER SHOES - Beach shoes are mandatory since when you walk into the sea you may encounter sharp volcanic rocks and/or coral. Closed-toe shoes such as Keen are highly encouraged.
• Dress in layers - We are staying at 4000 feet where the adiabatic lapse rate causes lots of rain. Although Hawaii is at 19 degrees north latitude it still can get cold in the winter and also wet so be prepared to wake up with temperatures around 50 degrees F and rain or fog. In the past some students just brought shorts and tee shirts and got really cold. Temperatures will range from 50 to 80 degrees F and it will be intensely sunny to rainy, depending on time of day and where we are located.
• Hiking shoes - We will hike several lava flows, and the lava is sharp.
• Protection from the sun - wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap, sunglasses, sunscreen.
• Swimming suit, of course! Don't forget a beach towel. Swimming goggles or mask w/snorkel highly recommended.
• One casual summer outfit for dinner at good restaurant.
• Rain jacket or poncho for the rainy times.
• Something warm to sleep in (that is, clothing; sheets and blankets are provided).

Toiletries Waterproof sun block (SPF 15+), lip balm, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, medications you take regularly (enough for 8 days), insect repellent. Towels will be provided.

Gear Water bottle, flashlight for night hiking, book bag, notebook, pens/pencils, camera w/film or memory card, any snacks you need to live, music, cards, games you like to play, snorkeling equipment or swimming goggles if you have your own, book to read (long flight), small binoculars if you wish

Money On our last night we will have dinner at Uncle Billy's restaurant in Hilo to see a Hula Show and have some fun. About $25. We will also stop at a typical Hawaiian plate lunch restaurant for about $15. Otherwise meals are covered except for whatever incidentals you wish to buy. Hilo Hattie's is a tourist store with Hawaiian clothes and souvenirs. Students spend big bucks there.

Note: Don't over-pack. One suitcase and backpack should be sufficient for this trip.
