CommentToday has been cloudy and the sun sensor did not become active until early afternoon. The rover has been driving thus far today without sun sensor information, using wheel odometry, INS only. It's heading information from wheel odometry and INS will be different and less accurate than the fusion of these two data sets and the sun sensor data. If the sun sensor suddenly comes on before the beginning of a traverse, the rover's estimate of its orientation will change and it will shift direction to compensate when it starts it drive. The waypoints that had been planned by the ground operators will now be rotated with respect the rover's new heading estimated from inclusion of the sun sensor. Thus the rover will not go to the waypoints defined in the images. During the actual MER mission the rover will need to compensate for this and similar anomalies. For now we assumed that the rover would not let the sun sensor come on randomly and change the vehicles knowledge of orientation, except on command from Earth. For now we kept the sun sensor off to complete Sol 6 and Sol 7 pre-uplink activities.
