Sol 9 FIDO Field Test Mission Manager Report

John Callas

Future Note:

  • Sol 12 will be only 34m DSN.

Opening Issues at Start of Sol 9:

  • What is the state of the rover Pancam mast?
  • What is the status on the elevated rover temperatures (on the IPS)?

Sol 8 Summary:

  • An anomaly occurred with the FIDO Pancam mast on Sol 7. The mast failed to stow. DTE was not sent at the last sol (only UHF due to DSN stow), but available at the start of Sol 9.

Sol 9 Downlink Assessment from Sol 8 Data:

  • Mast did not stow in previous sol (Sol 7). Contingency software did not activate. Identified software fix for contingency action. Tested fix on testbed over night. Will fix software on Sol 9. Desire mast activity to check out mast. However, mast can be used nominally on Sol 9.
  • Mast did stow at start of sequence as commanded. Rover drive complete. Temperatures nominal. All subsystems are go. Drive terrain index set to 3 (range 1 to 5). APXS and MB transmission problems suspected. Re-transmission to be requested.

Sol 9 SOWG Meeting:

  • Touch and Go. Approach Sol. No changes in resource predictions. No change in rover state of health since last report. Mineralogy group requests two Mini-TES observations on rock targets. Soil properties group requests Mini-TES on soil target. Geology requests approach on target with Pancam images. Soil properties group requests Pancam of rover tracks, and arm deploy and MI observations (Touch and Go) with IPS. Then, approach to new target (Plainfield). 360 Navcam panorama after approach. Atmospheres group requests sky observations with IPS, Pancam, Navcam and Mini-TES. MB state of health issue. Cannot do MB on CCT after drive (work volume safety). Maybe MB touch and go for 30 minutes, if not, internal MB check. Re-transmit requests for MB and APXS.

Sol 9 Post-IST Debrief:

  • Reduced some IPS observations. Reduced some support Pancam images, but contained elsewhere in post-drive panorama. Atmospheric observations at end of sequence. MB health check on internal reference only. APX and MB re-transmit requested. Sequence design meets all resource constraints. No first time events in this sequence. Contingency sequences added. The run out sequence is the science contingency sequence.
  • It was disclosed in the IST that 2 of 3 temperature sensors on the rover have failed on Sol 6. Two non-critical sensors (CPU and ambient) failed. The one remaining sensor, on the power supply, is still functional and the only critical sensor. No explanation offered for failure. No concern or risk for the rover expressed by engineering team.
  • Only one of 5 MI images were received. The explanation is that the robotic arm made contact with the surface and therefore terminated the MI image sequence with the collection of only a single image. The one received image is in focus, suggesting the image was collected close in. The contact and subsequent behavior was not reported as an anomaly.
  • The software fix to correct the mast contingency problem was uploaded to the rover.
  • UHF data on Sol 9 was received.
