Sol 1 (2000/12/18)
Site 1, Position 1
PlanThe test was to have FIDO placed in a random location in the JPL Mars Yard and to then have the science team locate and characterize a soil deposit that would then be trenched by using the front left wheel to rotate up to 400 cm equivalent distance while the other five wheels were fixed in place. The rotation would be away from the rover to dig a trench and pile up soil away from the rover proper. The rover would then be commanded to back up and survey its work, i.e., to image and acquire spectra for the trench and excavated materials.
ResultsNavcam, Hazcam, Bellycam acquired and analyzed. Determined that there were too many hazards to back up and that the immediate front of the rover offered excellent opportunities for trenching. .
CommentPlanned acquisition of Pancam, Navcam, and Bellycam data from initial rover locaiton.
